1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. ma!-an-na-iš KBo 18.175 v 5 (CTH 241, NS)
  ma-an-na[-iš] KUB 42.17 r. col. 8 (CTH 241, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Readings checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz. As pointed out in CHD L-N:161f., the sign shape of initial <ma> in KBo 18.175 v 5 is strange but not unparalleled; differently Košak 1982a:11 (ŠU.AN.NA(-)) and Siegelová 1986a:412-414 with fn. 28.

1.1.4Meaning

No meaning is assigned to mannaiš in the dictionaries mentioning the word (CHD L-N:161f., HEG L-M:118, cf. Ünal 2007a:423). The adjective describes baskets used to store different kinds of cloth or garments. Other qualifying adjectives in this context are ‘old’, ‘red’ and ‘short, low’ and so that virtually anything can be imagined as the meaning of mannai(ya)-. Thus, the interpretation ‘fruit basked’ for GIŠpisan mannaiš is highly tentative. It must strongly be emphasized that, apart from the supposed etymological connection with mann(a)-/manna- ‘seed (?)’ (cf. Starke 1986a:160; HEG L-M:118), it is only the ubiquitous use of baskets for harvesting that underlies this proposal.

1.1.5Stem

As analyzed in CHD L-N:161f., the syntactic position of the nom. sg. c. mannaiš following the word for ‘basket’ in one instance or another adjective in the other reveals its own adjectival character. Since there are no adjectival -ai- stems in Hittite, this implies a Luwian adjective with the relational suffix -i(ya)- based on a non-mutating a-stem.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The adjectival stem in -a- + -i(ya)- points to Luwian origin, as does the possible connection with mann(a)-/manna- ‘seed (?)’. However, the latter is only tentative.
