1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian
/asr(a)i-(di)?/, á-sa5+ra/i-
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
Attested once, this hapax legomenon can be found in a fragmentary inscription from Karkamiš with unclear dating.

1.1.2Forms
| 3sg. pret. ind. act. | /asrida?/ | á-sa5+ra/i-i-tà | KARKAMIŠ A 29g I.2 (Karkamiš) |
The form of KARKAMIŠ A 29g could not be collated, because the original is lost as are any squeezes, and the remaining photograph covers merely a part of what remains of the inscription, cf. Hawkins 2000a:219.

1.1.3Graphic Features
1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The spelling of the lexeme is reasonably clear, yet should still be seen as tentative, since the meaning of the word is unclear. Consequently, it has so far remained without connection to a word family or cognates in the other Anatolian languages, which could render its interpretation more certain. Use of the sign 〈tà〉 (*41) suggests a lenited dental /d/ (cf. Rieken 2008b:645).

1.1.4Meaning
Identified as a verb by Hawkins 2000a:219, the word is found just before the start of a new clause. Yet its meaning has remained in the dark, as it is the only word to have survived intact in the entire line. The context is hence too fragmented to permit any conclusions regarding its semantics. It therefore remains unclear whether or not /asr(a)i-(di)/ is connected to the word family around Luwian /asrul(i)-/ ‘female’.

1.1.5Stem
Despite the fragmentary nature of what remains of the inscription, it is nevertheless clear that the form is a 3sg. pret. act. Its spelling strongly suggests a lenited ending, and it appears to belong to the verbs in /-(a)i-(di)/ in Luwian, cf. Sasseville 2021a. Nothing further can be said about its formation at present.
