1.1.4Meaning

The noun idārašiš is coordinated with the subjects Tabarna and Tawannanna and, thus, represents some kind of official involved in the cultic activities of the festival. Morphologically speaking, is represents a substantivization in -i- of a genitival adjective *idāraša- ‘belonging to the idār’. The word *idār- can be interpreted as an abstract noun in *-(ā)dar/-nnaš derived from the verb ī- ‘to go’. Thus, the function of this official could be related to coming and going; cf. Hitt. ittaranni- c. ‘runner, courier’ (HW (2nd ed.)  I:303). Further information on the function of this Palaic official can only be gained through the elucidation of the context.

[D.S.]

For the lemma head seePal. ī- ‘to go’.
