The word mārḫiya could be instead an adjective in -iya- inflected either in the nominative/accusative neuter plural or in the locative singular. However, Carruba 1970a:63 suggests a verbal form in the 2nd singular imperative, which is more likely. He adduces the word […(-)]mar-ḫi-it (KUB 35.5 ii 3), which he parses as 3rd singular preterit, and attributes it to the same lexeme as mārḫiya. Likewise, Meriggi 1980a:343 suggests taking mar-ḫi-it as a verbal form cognate with Pal. marḫiya. The interpretation as a verbal form is made plausible by the fact that mar-ḫi-it ends the sentence. However, since each of the two contexts is fragmentary, any grammatical and lexical assignment must remain tentative.

1.1.4Meaning
The root marḫ- is probably the same as the one of mārḫa- c. ‘guest’, although the fragmentary state of the context hinders any verification. Carruba 1970a:63 equates the Palaic word marḫiya, which he interprets as a verb, with Hitt. mārkaḫḫi ‘I divide, I cut apart’ and translates it accordingly. The etymological connection faces a serious phonological problem vis-à-vis the sequence -rḫ- for Hitt. -rk-, which would be unparalleled; cf. Melchert 1994a:221f.
