1.1.4Meaning ‘to re-accept graciously’

The verb is used intransitively with the preverb parā. It occurs in the complaint of the Egyptian queen to Šuppiluliuma I that he would not sent her his son for marriage, but would be worried about being trapped by her. Therefore, Götze 1928a:61 proposed ‘du trautest (?)’ and Güterbock 1956b:96 translated KBo 5.6 iv 3’ nu-wa-mu-kán pa-ra-a Ú-UL i-ia-aš-ḫa-˹at˺-ta as ‘Thou didst not believe me’, relating the offensive act to the imagined act of trapping. He was followed by most scholars with due caution; cf. Friedrich 1952a:81, HED A-E, I:349, HEG A-K:347, [Sürenhagen 1981a:97, Del Monte 2009a:121, Klinger 2013b:132. Hoffner 2009a:349, on the other hand, favored ‘to be gracious/respectful’ in order to accommodate the contexts of the derivatives doppelter Glossenkeilyašhant(i)- and Glossenkeil(Glossenkeil)yašḫanduwa(n)t(i)- (see under Lemma). Still others refrained from assigning any meaning (DLL:51, CLL:272, CHD Š:17).

No specialized meaning fits every context. Accordingly, a more general ‘to accept’ is suggested here, including both ‘to re-accept graciously’ (for the relevant contexts see doppelter Glossenkeilyašhant(i)- and Glossenkeil(Glossenkeil)yašḫanduwa(n)t(i)-) and ‘to accept (as daughter-in-law)’, the latter referring to Šuppiluliuma’s immediate refusal of the queen’s proposal to marry his son.

1.1.5Stem

As maintained in Sasseville 2021a:25f., the verb is a denominative stem in -a-(ti). It is derived from a noun in -šḫa- (see already Sürenhagen 1981a:97, HEG A-K:347 and CLL:272), which, in turn, is an abstract noun based on iya-(i) ‘to buy’ (specialized from ‘to take’), see under Lemma.

1.1.6Derivatives

  1. doppelter Glossenkeilyašḫant(i)-
  2. doppelter Glossenkeilyašḫanduwa(n)t(i)-

1.1.7Origin

The Luwian origin of the verb is supported by its derivational base iya-(i) attested in Cuneiform Luwian as well as by the derivatives doppelter Glossenkeilyašḫant(i)- and doppelter Glossenkeilyašḫanduwa(n)t(i)-; cf. HEG I-K:347. The earlier view that it is related to the root of išḫāi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to bind’ is outdated on both phonological and semantic grounds (HED I:349).
