1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photograph of the Konkordanz. – The attestation with gloss wedge is emended as nu!-<kán> ḫar-ra+ni-iš[- by Groddek 2015a:89. This is hardly convincing, since
ḫa/ur-ra-ni-iš[-kán without emendation equally possible. Also a reading with numeral as 10ḫa/ur-ra-ni-iš[-kán is excluded, as no numeral higher than 5 is used to specify oracle birds in the reports (see Sakuma 2009a:76f.). Apart from that, the anaphoric pronoun referring to the bird in the following sentence would have to be nom. pl. -at- (instead of singular -aš-).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
No spelling is attested that would clarify the ambiguous reading the first sign ḫar/ḫur.
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
A semantic specification as ‘eagle’ or ‘eagle-like bird’ is based solely on the alleged etymological equation with Hitt. ḫārāš, ḫāranaš ‘eagle’ (Kronasser 1966a:222, HEG Ḫ:170f., Starke 1990a:62, Kloekhorst 2006a:132, EDHIL:302f., 76); cf. under lemma Pal. ḫāra(n)-.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Considering the frequent plene spelling of the final syllable, the word must be classified as an original -i(ya)- stem (for the principle, see Rieken 2017a). If the etymological connection with Hitt. ḫārāš, ḫāranaš ‘eagle’ were correct, ḫarranī- would be an adjectival derivative of the Luwian reflex of the word for ‘eagle’.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
The attestation with gloss wedge and the frequent plene spelling of the final spelling of
ḫarran(i)-/ḫurran(i)-, which is typical of Luwian -i(ya)- stems, can be considered enough evidence for Luwian origin of this word; cf. CLuw. (-)ḫarran(i)-/ḫurran(i)-. For the putative connection with Hitt. ḫāra(n)- see under PAnat. *Hóro(n)- ‘eagle’. The connection with Akk. MUŠENḪURRI remains very tentative; cf. HED Ḫ:139.
