†kurtalli-

‘(ghost word)’

1.1.1Transmission

According to a widespread opinion there is a word kurtalli-, a divine name and epithet, that derives from the word gurta- ‘citadel, fortress, acropolis’ via the Luwian appurtenance suffix -alla/i- in the meaning ‘citadel dweller’ vel sim. (HEG A-K:663; HED K:276; EDHIL:495; cf. also Haas 1994a:813; Ünal 2007a:372, Ünal 2016a:300; Tischler 2008a:95, Tischler 2016a:179; but not included in the lists of Luwianisms of Melchert 2005a and van den Hout 2007a). Setting aside that the meaning of gurta- is currently defined differently (see s.v.), the three passages quoted for the existence of this word (Neu 1974b:271; HED K:276) are problematic (checked against the photos of the Konkordanz): Dkur-˹ta˺-[ in KBo 23.68 obv. iii 5’ can also be read as Dkur-˹ša˺-[ (van Gessel 1998a:271, the decisive part of the sign is missing) and kur-ta-al-li in KUB 60.40, 4’ is to be read as kur-ša-al-˹li˺ (see already Popko & Taracha 1988a:110; Groddek 2006a:40; Wilhelm 2016a:19), both are further attestations of the well-attested divine name and epithet Kuršalli (for the passages see van Gessel 1998a:271). Thus only kur-ta-˹al-li-in˺ in KBo 30.69 iii 25’ remains (if this reading is correct at all, since the sign is not anymore legible on the photos of the Konkordanz), which can easily be explained as a scribal error for kur-ša!-˹al-li-in˺ (see already van Gessel 1998a:271), so that the existence of the word kurtalli- should be regarded as uncertain at best (cf. Wilhelm 2016a:19).
