Attestations following EDHIL:841f. (cf. also Eichner 1992a:70; HEG T,D:175; Ünal 2007a:693, Ünal 2016a:520) checked against the photograph of the Konkordanz. Ünal 2007a:693, Ünal 2016a:520 still includes “3-liš” from KUB 18.64, 3’ (Sommer 1944a:206 n. 1; Friedrich 1952a:214, but both with question mark), which is, however, to be read as 3-ŠÚ (Neu apud HEG T,D:175).

1.1.3Meaning ‘third-in-command’

Based on the context, in which a soldier’s request for permission runs through a chain of commanders of growing rank, it was early recognized that the word means something like ‘third’ (Sommer 1944a:206, Sommer apud Friedrich 1950a:251 n. 3; Friedrich 1952a:214; Jakob-Rost 1965a:179), which, however, should mean approximately ‘man of third rank’ due to the different ranks (Güterbock 1957b:2f.; Friedrich 1961b:24; Benveniste 1962a:86; Kronasser 1966a:365; Berman 1972a:131; Güterbock & van den Hout 1991a:9, 85; Eichner 1992a:70; HEG T,D:174, Tischler 2008a:190, Tischler 2016a:361; McMahon 2003a:226; Ünal 2007a:693, Ünal 2016a:520; EDHIL:842, 896; Bauer 2009a:6; Miller 2013a:105; Goedegebuure 2014a:561), more precisely, since we are dealing with a command chain, ‘third-in-command’ (Singer 2005a:448; Melchert 2005a:449; Yakubovich 2010d:264). It is exactly this context that shows that we are dealing here with a substantivized adjective in a specific meaning and not with an adjectival phrase (i.e. **LÚ tarriyanalliš ‘the third man’).

1.1.4Origin

Although early research identified it as a Hittite word (Sommer 1944a:206; Benveniste 1962a:86; Kronasser 1966a:365), it was rightly pointed out by Eichner 1992a:71f. that it cannot be Hittite due to its geminate -rr- and its -alla/i- suffix – both of them pointing unambiguously to a Luwian loanword (as for the base of the derivation he plausibly suggests either *tarriya- ‘third’ with -na- “indicating position” [but no meaning can be assigned to this Luwian nominal suffix, see Melchert 2003b:196] or “perhaps” an adverb, *tarriyan ‘thirdly’). This is also today the generally accepted view (Singer 2005a:448f.; Melchert 2005a:449; EDHIL:842, 896 [adding also the vocalism different from that of the Hittite word and analysing it as *tri-i̯o-no-]; Yakubovich 2010d:264), although it does not appear in the list of Luwianisms of van den Hout 2007a.
