1.1.4Meaning
The word širiyan can be best interpreted as the direct object of parinat ‘he blew’. Therefore, širian must be some kind of musical instrument into which the person would blow. Differently, Eichner 2010a:45 takes širiyan as an adverb related to Hittite šēr ‘on, above’, CLuw. šarri ‘id.’. For the ending in -ian, he compares Hitt. pariyan ‘over’. This is formally possible, but Eichner’s analysis fails to result in a good translation for the sentence.
