1.1.3Meaning ‘(unknown)’

The meaning of this word is unknown (Laroche 1959a:92; CLL:212; Tischler 2008a:190, Tischler 2016a:361; Ünal 2016a:971). Tischler and Melchert consider a substantive, but Melchert adds also adverb as a possibility. If it is an adverb, it must be based on an adjective (due to the -iya- suffix of tarimaniya), which is formally possible, since these adverbs are nom.-acc. sg. or pl. n. forms of the adjectives (Plöchl 2003a:84; Payne 2014b:28; contra Yakubovich 2015b, who assumes only singular forms).

The context (KUB 25.39 iv 3-4) is not helpful beyond the observation that it may require a(n indirect) object (both are possible here, formally speaking, a nom.-acc. pl. n. or a dat.-loc. sg. [with the ai > a contraction, Yakubovich 2015b]), but an adverb is equally possible, if the verb has no direct object (although the verb is inflected medially, this does not necessarily excludes a direct object [cf. Melchert 2003b:205], and since the verb is otherwise unknown [cf. s.v.], this question cannot be decided at the moment): warḫitantantiš=ti dakkūīš tarimaniya ḫāššidari (transliteration following Starke 1985b:329), i.e. ‘the dark w. .-es the tarimaniya-s / for the tarimaniya / tarimaniya-like’. Although the derivational suffixes of tarimaniya are clear (-(m)man- action noun suffix from verbs and -iya- adjective suffix [that can be substantivized], cf. Melchert 2003b:197), the morphology also does not reveal the meaning of the word.
