acc. sg. c.? [pa-tal]-˹ḫa˺-a-im-ma‹-an? KUB 35.88 ii 15 (CTH 766, NS)

Attestations following CLL:174, checked against the photograph of the Konkordanz. The restoration follows Starke 1985b:227 and is based on the thematically identical Hittite phrases of KBo 13.241 rev. 20 and KUB 35.145 iii 15’ with participles from the verb patalḫāi- and patalḫiya- (resp.) in this position (see s.vv. doppelter Glossenkeilpatalḫandan and patalḫiyama/i-).

Based on the context and the phrases of the quoted parallel texts, this word qualifies the preceding object of the sentence (which is UR.BAR.RA ‘wolf’ in those versions) and in this case one expects agreement between the preceding word and [pa-tal]-ḫa-a-im-ma, which is, however, formally a nom.-acc. pl. n. Thus Starke 1990a:250 with n. 852 suggests that the preceding word is not only ‘wolf’, but for instance ‘the feet of the wolf’ (there is enough space for such a restoration). Alternatively, one may consider a slight emendation into [pa-tal]-ḫa-a-im-ma‹-an›, which would allow a perfect parallelism with the other texts (note that the participle in the preceding phrase, ki-i-ša-am-ma-x?[, has the same problem, see the discussion s.v. kīša-).

Ünal 2016a:967 books this word as “patalḫaimman-” with the meaning ‘fetter’, implying a nom.-acc. pl. n. as a partitive apposition to the preceding object. Although this is in theory possible, the participles of the parallel versions rather point to a participle.

1.1.3Meaning ‘fettered’

There is a general agreement that the underlying verb means ‘to fetter’ (Starke 1990a:250; CLL:174; HEG L-S:537f., Tischler 2008a:142, Tischler 2016a:269; EDHIL:658 [with question mark] and similarly HED Pa:201f. [‘shackle, hobble, trammel, incapacitate’]), the only is exception is Ünal 2016a:967 (‘fetter’), for which see under Forms. For a detailed discussion of the meaning see s.v. patalḫiyama/i-.
