1.1.4Meaning
A connection with the Hittite heteroclite wātar n. ‘water’ was suggested by Kammenhuber 1959a:65 based on the phonetic resemblance. This could be contextually supported by the occurrence of the Hittite word for water in the Hittite passage (KUB 35.164 ii 3’) preceding the Palaic one. This approach is criticized by Melchert 1994a:209, who objects to the connection on phonological grounds; cf. HEG W-Z:433f. Carruba 1970a:79 compares Luw. wa-at-ta-ne-i ‘banquet (?)’ (KUB 35.133 ii 24’), which is possible, but cannot be proven (see now CLuw. wattani(ya)-). Since the context is fragmentary any semantic approach must remain tentative.
