mara(n)-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme (if all forms really belong to one lexeme) occurs in almost every Palaic text.

1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. ma-˹a˺-ra-aš KUB 35.163 iii 16 (CTH 753, NS)
acc. sg. ma-ra-a-an KUB 35.163 iii 19 (CTH 753, NS)
  ma-a-ra-an KBo 19.152 + KBo 19.158 iv! 4´/8´ (CTH 751, MS)
dat. sg. ˹ma˺-a-ra-ni

CHDS 2.52 + DBH 46/2.101

+ KUB 35.159 6´/3´/7´

(CTH 753, NS)
gen. pl. (?) ma-a-ra-na-an KUB 35.165 obv. 26 (CTH 751, OS or MS)
  ma-a-ra-na-a[n] KBo 19.152 + KBo 19.158 iv! 3´/7´ (CTH 751, MS)
unknown ma-a-ra-na-at KUB 35.168, 9´ (CTH 752, OS)

The appurtenance of all these words to the same lexeme is not certain; cf. Carruba 1970a:63. They are grouped here together for economical purposes. No case assignment is certain either, because these forms appear mostly in fragmentary or obscure passages. The form ma-a-ra-na-at could be segmented as ma-a-ra-n=a-at (with the demonstrative pronoun =(k)at) instead.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv).

1.1.4Meaning

No semantic assignment is provided; cf. Carruba 1970a:63. It is worth noticing that the lexeme mara(n)- occurs twice with the adverb wašu ‘well’ (KUB 35.165 obv. 26, KBo 19.152 + KBo 19.158 iv! 7’/3’).

[D.S.]

1.1.5Stem

Assuming that the forms listed in the paradigm above all belong to the same lexeme, one is surely dealing with an n-stem, i.e. mara(n)-.
