1.1 Luwian in Hittite transmission

allinašša/i-

‘(a type of bread, a festival)’

1.1.1Transmission

The lexeme is found intact only twice, once in a fragment of festival and incantation rituals (CTH 500) and once in a fragment of Hittite-Hurrian rituals and incantations (CTH 790). Two more attestations in a list of Hurrian deities in festival rituals (CTH 705) are only partly preserved. An oracle report (CTH 568) found in Emar shows an additional attestation referring to a festival. It is also attested as a divine name Dallinašši- (van Gessel 1998a:25).

1.1.4Meaning

The underlying lexeme allinašša/i- contains the relational -ašša/i- suffix. It represents a substantivized epithet of a bread, a festival, and a divine name (see under Derivatives), all of which appear to be derived from an unattested base *allina(/i)- (see Hoffner 1974a:150, Laroche 1980a:44, Salvini & Trémouille 2003a:233, Richter 2012a:17); cf. also the substantivized stem allinal(l)a/i- derived from the same base with the suffix -alla/i-.Hoffner 1974a:150 assumes that the lexemes are related to the geographical name ḪUR.SAGAl(?)-li-ni (dat./loc. sg.), but Melchert (DCL:11) argues against the connection, pointing out the geographical distance between ḪUR.SAGAllina- and URUḪapatḫa in the north close to Nerik (for the association of the allinašši-deities with URUḪapatḫa, see KBo 39.48 v 21).

1.1.5Stem

A stem in -a/i- with i-mutation can be posited on account of the productive suffix -ašša/i-. For the suffixation, see under Meaning. Ünal 2007a:18 cites an a-stem EZEN4allina-, presumably abstracted from the same attestation EZEN4al-li-na-aš-ša from Meskene/Emar.

1.1.6Origin

Although the origin of the base *allina(/i)- remains unclear, the suffixes -ašša/i- and -alla/i- indicate a transmission via Luwian, cf. Laroche 1980a:44, Yakubovich 2015a, chapter 6.1, DCL:11, Rieken forthcoming. An ultimately Hurrian origin seems to be assumed by Ünal 2007a:18 and Richter 2012a:17.
