1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. sg. a-ri-šu-wa-an-ti KUB 8.78 iii 21’ (CTH 239, NS)

Cf. Starke 1990a:113, Maier 2013a:202, DCL:27.

[E.R.]

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. Starke 1990a:113 n. 315 mentions the possibility of an emendation as °-ti-iš〉 in case of agreement with A.ŠÀ (nom.sg.). Alternatively, an ellipsis of a head noun in the dat./loc. sg. should be assumed.

[E.R.]

1.1.4Meaning

The semantic assignment arišuwant(i)- ‘(epithet of a field)’ is based on its attestation in a list of fields. The adjective very likely modifies the preceding noun [1 A].ŠÀ, cf. Maier 2013a:202, but see under Graphic Features.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

The hapax legomenon arišuwant(i)- is a possessive adjective derived with the suffix -want(i)- based on an -s-stem *ariš- with unclear meaning, cf.  Starke 1990a:113, Maier 2013a:202, DCL:27. Presumably, it is related to the hapax legomena Hitt. areša- (KUB 7.1 i 23) and  Hitt. ariša- (KUB 24.7 ii 6); both denote a (part of a) plant or a plant substance.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

Melchert 2005a:451 considers a Luwian origin of arišuwant(i)-. This proposal is supported by the attestation of a Hittite thematic noun ariša-, which otherwise would lead to a Hittite possessive derivative arišawant-.
