1.1.4Meaning
The semantic interpretation is based on the triligual Message of LÚ-DINGIR-RA to his mother which equates KA×UD ‘tooth’ with Hitt. laḫpa- obviously used as a term for the material which can be assumed to be ivory (since Güterbock 1971b:1 n. 2; cf. HEG:14f., HED L:12f., CHD L-N:12f., HHw:100, Ünal 2007a:388).Outdated HW:125, DLL:61, Kronasser 1966a:187.

1.1.5Stem
Synchronically, laḫpa- represents an a-stem.

1.1.6Origin
Laroche 1968a:777 was the first to propose a Wanderwort related to gr. ҆ελέφαντ- ‘ivory’ (with speculations on the phonetics). The idea was accepted by HEG:14f. and HED L:12f. with references, DCL:128 (implicit). van den Hout 2006a:243 lists the word as Luwian, but there is no further indication for this origin. Instead, the gloss wedges more likely marks it as a foreign word in general (DCL:128).Outdated Kronasser 1966a:187.
