1.1.4Meaning
Despite the doubts of Melchert (DCL:s.v.), who deemed the form ‘not assured’, the form is transparent and the fact that the text in the line below seems to read [ma-an-t]al-la-aš-ša-at (see mantallaššamma/i-) reinforces the interpretation. Although the context is extremely fragmentary, at least the transparent stem formation permits an analysis as an abstract noun in -āḫi(t)- (see below under Stem) and a tentative translation as ‘status of mantalla/i-’.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
The lexeme is clearly a derivative of the adjective mantalla/i- ‘related to slander (vel sim.)’, more precisely an abstract noun formed with the suffix -āḫi(t)-, which is quite productive in Luwian; see for example Melchert 2003b:198.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
Considering the derivational suffix and the Luwian nature of the base, the word is Luwian: thus also DCL:s.v., albeit with uncertainty.
