1.1.4Meaning
The assignment of the generic meaning is based on the logogram and confirmed by other bread names in the context (Hoffner 1973a:170, CHD L-N:43f., HHw:92, Ünal 2007a:396, DCL:s.v.).

1.1.5Stem
The lexeme represents a substantivized relational adjective in -ašša/i- (Hoffner 1973a:170). While Tischler’s (HEG L-N:32, 42) identification of its base *lapa- with lappa- ‘heat’ can be ruled out on account of the singleton -p- in NINDAlapašša/i-, Melchert (DCL:s.v.) reconstructs it as an action noun *lāpa- ‘licking’ and, in terms of semantics, compares German Leckerbissen.Outdated is the connection with NINDAalpašša/i- by Hoffner 1973a:150, 170.

1.1.6Origin
The spelling with the BA sign at KBo 64.194 iv 15’ makes a foreign origin very likely (Popova & Kassian 2016a, Kloekhorst 2010a:225f., Rieken & Yakubovich 2020a:218f.). More specifically, the suffix -ašša/i- indicates that the word is taken over from Luwian (CHD L-N:43f., HEG L-N:32, 42, DCL:s.v.).
