1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. c. pár-na-al-li-iš KUB 5.6 iii 13 (CTH 570, NS)

The reading pár-na-al-la at KUB 25.27 i 18, modified from Alp 1940a:26 and generally accepted in the literature (e.g. CHD P:176f., HED PE, PI, PU:88f, HEG P:485), cannot possibly be correct. While word-final -la seems clear and -al- at least possible, the photograph does not show the strokes needed for pár-na- (rather -uš). However, no alternative reading can be offered here at this point.

1.1.4Meaning

The transparent stem formation, i.e. parn(a)- ‘house’ plus relational suffix -alla/i-, soon led to the interpretation as ‘of the house/estate’, sometimes with specification ‘of the (royal) house’ (HW:162, van Brock 1962a:107, Kronasser 1966a:21, Archi 1979b:88, CHD P:176f., HHw:124, Ünal 2007a:523, HEG P:485, HED PE, PI, PU:88f.).

The equation with dumu.é.gal-iš considered by Sommer & Falkenstein 1938a:112 n. 1 was generally rejected on account of the false reading MEŠ é.gal pár-na-al-la-aš (sic!) (following Alp 1940a:26). However, not only is MEŠ é.gal not identical with dumu.é.gal, but the reading cannot be upheld, either. Yet, there is also no positive argument for the equation.

1.1.6Origin

Although the base parn(a)- represents a genuinely Hittite word, the use of the adjectival suffix -alla/i- suggests a Luwian origin, as does the collocation with the DZawalli(ya)- deity, whose name probably originates in Luwian, too.
