1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is secure because of two cognates in CLuw., viz. the verb tarkumm(a)i-(di) ‘to report orally’ and the noun tarkummiya- ‘report’; cf. Peker 2014a:191.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning was first suggested by Peker 2014a:191, based on the link with CLuw. tarkumm(a)i-(di) ‘to report orally’. In the contexts of attestation on a funerary stele, the word clearly denotes a profession, and the two relevant clauses at YUNUS, §1 and §3 run: za-wa/i STELE-ni-zi Ita-sá Isa+ra/i-pu-wa/i-ní-sa-ha tara/i-ku-ma-mi-zi CAPUT-ti-zípa+ra/i-i-ha-wa/i-〈〈〉〉 FILIUS-mu-wa/i〈-〉-zi tara/i-ku-ma-mi-zi ARHA (“*69”)su-ni-ta, approx. /za=wa wanid=za Tas(sa) Sarpuwanis(sa)=ha tarkummaminzi …-ttinzi … pari=ha=wa nimuwizzanzi tarkummaminzi ahha sun(n)inta/, translating as ‘This stele (is) of Ta and Sarpuwani, translators, noblemen. (They set up this stele as a good one.) And sons (and) interpreters libated before (it). (He who stands aggressively to it, against him the gods will litigate)’ (cf. Peker 2014a:190).

1.1.5Stem

The denominal suffix used is likely /-am(i)-/ rather than the participial suffix /-mma/i-/ with subsequent substantivization; cf. Melchert 2003b:195, Sasseville 2021a:230. The assumed derivational base */tarkumm-/ is, however, unattested.
