1.1.1Transmission

Both gloss-wedge marked forms come from a school tablet based upon a New Hittite genuine letter (Hoffner 2009a:335). For the other attestations without gloss wedges, which are not included in the table below, see HED H:278 and HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:532f.

1.1.4Meaning

It has long been common sense that the verb, a factitive -aḫḫ- derivative of a base *ḫattula- ‘healthy’ (see under Stem), denotes ‘to make healthy’ (see e.g. HW:67 with reference to Forrer, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:532f., Kronasser 1966a:427, HED H:278, HEG A-K:229, HHw:48, Ünal 2007a:205). This accords well also with the context of the gloss wedge marked forms, in which the sender of the letter addresses the illness of the addressee (KBo 13.62 obv. 5, restored), more specifically a fever (ibid. 7), and expresses the wish that the gods may let her recover: (6)... nu-ut-ta doppelter Glossenkeilḫa-at-tu-la-⸢aḫ-ḫa-an-du⸣ “let them (scil. the gods) make you healthy” (ibid. iii 6) and (13)⸢m⸣a-an-na dingirMEŠ ti-an-zi nam-⸢ma⸣ ma-an-na b[e-el-ti4-ia] (14)doppelter Glossenkeilḫa-at-tu-la-aḫ-ḫa-an-zi nam-ma “Oh that the gods would step in again! Oh that they would make my l[ady] healthy again!” (ibid. 13f.; cf. Hagenbuchner 1989a:22, Hoffner 2009a:338; Marizza 2009a:175).

1.1.5Stem

The verb represents a Hittite factitive stem in -aḫḫ-(ḫi), derived from a (thematic) adjective generally reconstructed as *ḫattula- (Kronasser 1966a:427, HEG A-K:229, Starke 1990a:166), whereas the attested Hittite nom. sg. c. ḫadduliš belongs to an i-stem. However, the type of šannapili- ‘empty’ vs. šannapilaḫḫ- ‘to empty’ shows that at least synchronically the a-stem *ḫattula- is not needed and Hitt. ḫadduli- could have functioned as the base, instead. For a further analysis, see under Reconstruction of the lemma head.

1.1.6Origin

The word family of ḫattulaḫḫ-(ḫi) is firmly entrenched in the Hittite lexicon and derivational morphology (see under Stem). Moreover, none of the attested forms, with or without gloss wedges, features Luwian endings, and no phonological reason points to a Luwian borrowing. Therefore, Starke’s assumption that the entire word family originates from Luwian (Starke 1990a:166, considered possible in CLL:66) should be met with hesitation. Nevertheless, the Hittite scribe was apparently aware of the Luwian cognates, as pointed out by Starke 1990a:166, and therefore marked the verb with gloss wedges.
