1.1.4Meaning

The adjective is used in the description of a reed basket (CHDP:388). Siegelová 1986a:416 (followed in Ünal 2007a:554) thought of a genitival meaning: ‘zum Holzgestell(?) gehörig’; similar Košak 1982a:233 (followed in DCL:s.v.): ‘belonging to the side-table’. However, the (secondary) denominative possessive function of the adjectives in -aimma/i- is now established. This leaves two options, either ‘rimmed, bordered, edged’ (thus Burgin 2022a:455) or ‘with a GIŠ/GIpuriya-’, which comes semantically close to Košak’s solution; undecided HHw:136: ‘mit einem puri versehen’.Implausible is the attempt by Starke 1990a:255 (also HEG P:659) to interpret puriyaima/i- as the participle of a verbal stem *puriyai-, a false Hittitization of a Luwian verb *puri-, which is cognate with doppelter Glossenkeilpurpuriyam(ma)n-; deverbal derivation also in HED PE, PI, PU:131-133.

1.1.5Stem

As pointed out under Meaning, the word represents a denominal possessive derivative in -aimma/i- (with a deficient spelling). Given the original i-stem base *pūri- (→ pūr(i)-), the complicated account as a Hittite hypercorrection suggested by Melchert 2005a:455 n. 11 is unnecessary.

1.1.6Origin

The suffix -aimma/i- in puriyaima/i- reveals the Luwian origin of the adjective (Starke 1990a:255, HEG P:659, Burgin 2022a:455, DCL:s.v.).
