‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

If all forms cited below belong to the same verb, its attestations occur in a festival text, a birth ritual, and a ritual fragment belonging to the Kuwattalla tradition (from MS onwards).

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. act. ḫa-a-la-a-t[a? KUB 35.137 rev. 4’ (CTH 773, NS)
  ḫa-la-ta KUB 35.88 iii 10’ (CTH 766, NS)
  ḫa-la-a[t-ta-ru] KUB 35.49 iv 7’ (CTH 761, MS)

Cf. also ḫal-la-t[a?-ru?] at KUB 35.49 iv 6’, but it differs from ḫa-la-a[t-ta-ru] ibid. iv 7’ regarding the gemination of both -l- and -t-.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The restoration of ḫa-la-at-[ta-ru] at KUB 35.49 iv 7’ follows Melchert (in CLL:46), who refers to the parallel structures in the preceding lines, i.e., a verb in -atta (+ =pa) + =aš ‘he’ followed by a verb in -ttaru.

1.1.4Meaning

No meaning has been assigned so far (DLL:38, CLL:46, HHw:35), and none of the contexts is really informative. From KUB 35.49 iv 7’ it can be deduced that the action is performed on the evil tongue or hand and probably leads to its destruction or at least its disarmament. It is tempting to see a correspondence between CLuw. ḫālā(i)-(di) and Hitt. ḫalā(i)-(mi) ‘to set in motion’, but this does not accord with the destructive act assumed before. Due to the multitude of different words beginning with ḫal- in the Anatolian languages, considerations regarding the stem formation do not provide any clue as to the precise meaning either.

1.1.5Stem

The forms ending in -(C)a-(a-)ta permit a classification of the verb as one of the -ā(i)-(di) denominatives.
