1.1.2Forms
| 3sg. pret. act.(?) | xudiwazade | TL 48.7 (Xanthos) |
There are three competing views regarding the word xudiwazade: (1) a personal name in the nom. sg. (see Melchert 1989b:43, DLL:109), (2) agent noun in -aza- followed by particle =de (see Schürr 2004b:193f., Neumann 2007a:137; cf. Meriggi 1963a:14 “xudiwaza=de (?)”), (3) a 3sg. pret. verbal form of a denominative verb in -a(i)-(di) (see Sasseville 2021a:104f.).The analysis offered by Gehrisch 2018a:104 “abl./instr. Pl.” is nonsensical. This all depends on the syntactic interpretation of the passage as well as its clause division. Solutions no. 1 and 2 suffer from an unusual and unattractive word order, whereas solution no. 3 reconciles the syntactic problems and explains the unexpected geminate in epenẽtijatte. Therefore, the last view is adopted here, although it should be emphasized that more evidence would be welcome.

1.1.3Meaning
The base of xudiwazade has been etymologically connected with Lyc. A xddaza- ‘slave’ (see also CLuw. ḫūtarlānn(i)-) by Schürr 2004b:193f. and Neumann 2007a:137, which is plausible, although it cannot yet be confirmed.

1.1.4Stem
It is generally agreed that xudiwazade contains the productive Lycian suffix -aza-, although the sequence -iw- remains unclear (cf. Neumann 2007a:137). Sasseville 2021a:104f. further sees a denominative verb in -a(i)-(di), which is typically derived from a-stems.
