1.1.4Meaning ‘river, (meta.) blood’

The semantic assignment of Palaic ḫāpna- is facilitated due to the use of the sumerogram ÍD ‘river’ in a parallel passage (Carruba 1970a:54, Laroche 1973a:180, Watkins 1978a:306). In the context, where each attestation occurs, the word ‘river’ is used as a metaphor for ‘blood’ (Watkins 1978a:310).

†ḫāppan-

‘river’

1.2.1Literature / Comments

Pace HW (2nd ed.) H:197, there is no evidence that Hitt. ḫa-pa-na and ḫa-a-ap-pa-na mean ‘river’. Furthermore, the instances of ÍD-ni (KUB 17.8 iv 23), ÍD.MEŠ-na (KUB 7.58 iii 15) are hardly enough to posit a new Hittite lexeme for ‘river’; cf. the discussion under PAnat. *Hab- Reconstruction. Starke 1981a:144 argues that the first example reflects Cluw. ḫapinn(i)- c., since it occurs in a ritual context rich in Luwianisms. For the second example, he reads Hurr. šiyena, since it occurs in a Hurrian context.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

The Palaic lexeme ḫāpna- inflects according to the paradigm of the a-stems. The -n- before the stem-final -a- reflects an older formation with the Hoffman’s suffix *-h3on- (Hamp 1972a:36f.). In the prehistory of Palaic, a new thematic stem form *ḫábno- was generated from the inherited gen. sg. PAnat. *Habnos; cf. Oettinger 1980a:61 n. 66.
