1.1.4Meaning

CLuw. pappaša-(i) is a reduplicated derivative of pašš-(ti) ‘to swallow’ (see that lemma with further references and cf. the translations in e.g. CHD P:205 and HED PA:182). A similar meaning is thus to be assumed for this word. Per Sasseville 2021a:357 the function of reduplication is distributive on account of the object in the singular attestation being plural, i.e. ENMEŠ ‘lords’. Conversely, Dempsey 2015a:244 speculates that the reduplication may have an intensifying function.
