1.1.4Meaning
Melchert 1984b:35 compares the use of apani with the one of gani, as both appear in similar sentences, and suggests an adverb of manner: gāni=du=tta kuiš anitti ‘whoever performs in this way for you’. He raises the possibility that the ending -ani is nom./acc. sg. n. (cf. Hitt. eni ‘this’) and would, therefore, constitute the direct object of the verb. However, based on the passage KUB 35.165 rev. 9’-10’ where the verb aniye/a-(ti) appears frequently, it is clear that the verb is used intransitively. That voids the need for a direct object here. The forms apani and gāni are frozen forms of the pronouns apa- and kā- respectively and are used as adverbs of manner.
