1.1.4Meaning
The semantic interpretation of the word (since Laroche 1955a:78-81) is based on the transparent word formation, viz. base ḫīrūt- ‘(false) oath plus relational suffix -alla/i- (Otten 1953a:66, Kronasser 1966a:214, HEG A-K:252, Starke 1990a:28, Ünal 2007a:216). However, in contrast to the noun ḫīrūn/t- ‘(false) oath’, its derivative does not seem to possess a negative connotation, since the Sun-god witnesses every oath, not only the false ones (Watkins 1993a:469); cf. also García Ramón 2011a:87 on a Greek parallel and see ḫīrūn/t- ‘(false) oath’ for further references.Outdated is the translation ‘jureur’ by Laroche (in DLL:45), who seems to have parsed an alleged agent noun suffix -talli- here, but this is rightly rejected in Kronasser 1966a:214 n. 1, HEG A-K:252.
