1.1.4Meaning
CLuw. dudummanitan constitutes the last word (and hence very likely the verb) of a song incipit fraught with unsolved problems in syntactical and lexical respects. Therefore, its interpretation must rely on its stem formation, which seems reasonably transparent. Following Eichner 1993a:107 n. 50 and Melchert (CLL:238), the lexeme belongs to the word family of Hitt. du(wa)ddu- ‘Have mercy!’. Eichner’s implausible analysis as a participle *du(d)dumi- derived with the verbal suffix -ani-(ti) was replaced by Sasseville 2021a:146 with that of a denominative verb in -i-(ti) based on the stem form *du(d)dum(ma)n- of an abstract noun with the meaning ‘mercy’. The resulting semantic interpretation ‘to have mercy on’ is found in Eichner 1993a:107 n. 50, CLL:238, HHw:183, HEG T:477, Sasseville 2021a:146 (no translation offered in DLL:100).
