/hamsiyad(i)-/, NEPOS-ia-ti-

‘descendant, grandson (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

Attested just once, this hapax legomenon occurs in an inscription from Amuq, dating to the 10th or 9th century BCE.

dat./loc. sg. /hamsiyadi/ ˹X˺(.)NEPOS-ia-ti PANCARLI, §2 (Amuq)

In their edition princeps, Herrmann, van den Hout & Beyazlar 2016a:61 note that the attestation in PANCARLI, §2 is unlikely to start with the expected logogram , since what is left of the sign does not resemble the shape of INFANS in the least.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The exact phonological interpretation of this lexeme remains somewhat tentative for the moment, also because its meaning is not entirely clear from the context. Thus it is assumed, but cannot be proven, that the logogram stands for /hams(i)-/ (cf. Herrmann, van den Hout & Beyazlar 2016a:61). The suffix /-ad(i)-/ is well-known from other HLuw. nouns, and since it is used with a lenited dental in the kinship term /huhad(i)-/ ‘great-grandfather’ and its derivatives, the same quality is assumed for the present lexeme; future evidence may result in a reappraisal, however.

1.1.4Meaning

The word occurs in an inscription that was published only recently, and it constitutes a new addition to what is known of the HLuw. lexicon. In their editio princeps, Herrmann, van den Hout & Beyazlar 2016a:61 tentatively suggest ‘descendant’ in the context of PANCARLI, §2: *a-[w]a/i-ta! ku-ma-na ˹X˺(.)NEPOS-ia-ti [k]wa/i-ti-i [(AVUS?)]hu-ha-ti [CRU]S.CRUS?i˺-´ PRAE-i-ia-n[a]-i, approx. /a=wa=ada=tta kuman hamsiyadi kwatti huhadi niyazzai pariyan/ ‘when it (scil. this stele?) [pas]ses dow[n] from the grandfather to one of the descendants?’. While entirely possible, it should also be considered that the denotation may be more precise, e.g. ‘grandson’ vel sim.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

With the meaning not entirely clear, the morphological analysis must remain similarly tentative. However, it is likely that the present noun is a denominal formation in /-ad(i)-/, of which a number can be found in the HLuw. data.Often, the quality of the dental in this suffix is different from one formation to the next and can thus not be given with any degree of certainty, cf. Yakubovich 2015b:6.2. But because the present word is also a kinship term, the shape /-ad(i)-/ is assumed. The derivational basis for putative /hamsiyad(i)-/ is likely to be the adjective */hamsi(ya)-/ ‘of grandson’ rather than the noun /hams(i)-/ ‘grandson’, but the latter is possible, too.
