1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, since it is not clear how to correctly interpret the spelling attested at CEKKE inscr. 1, §2. The logogram (sign *382) may either be used as a determinative here, in which case the word would be /pam(m)a-/ or it may represent part of the phonological form of the word, resulting in a so far acephalic syllabic rendition /…-pam(m)a-/.

The logogram is otherwise frequently found to accompany words from the domain of dominance such as HLuw. /salhant-/ ‘greatness’ and HLuw. /tabariya-(ti)/ ‘to rule’.

1.1.4Meaning

Since the word has yet to be connected to possible cognates, its precise meaning remains out of reach. However, a general semantic assessment is facilitated by the context of attestation, because in CEKKE inscr. 1, clause §2 refers to the set-up or part of it: a-wa/i za LIGNUM(-)˹pa˺-ma-za ˹DOMINUS˺.SOL-wa/i+ra/i-sá sa-sa+ra/i˺-ia ˹DOMINUS˺-ni á-pa-sa-na PONERE-, approx. /a=wa za (…-)pam(m)an=za Nannitiwadis? Sasturaya nanni abassan tuwatta/, translating as ‘Nannitiwadi put (up) this (installation) for Sastura, his master, (and he, the latter, inscribed this stele)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:145). Hawkins 2000a:147 cautiously considers a meaning such as ‘decree’, but a reference to the object(s) at hand appears more likely.

1.1.5Stem

Beyond the fact that the word represents a neuter gender noun, its morphological structure is difficult to assess for a lack of cognates in addition to the existing uncertainty over its phonological form. Hawkins 2000a:147 considers the word to be a substantivised participle in /-mma/i-/ of a verb ending in /-pa-/, which is possible, but not provable without additional data. Alternatively, the word may be a neuter action noun in (the related suffix) /-mman-/, or a substantivised adjective of appurtenance in /-ma/i-/; cf. Melchert 2003b:195, 197.
