CHD P:139f. (followed in HHw:120, HEG P:442) suggests the morphological analysis parandašš=an=kan, which can be excluded because the geminate -šš- would be unexpected (there is also no reason to assume geminating =(y)a ‘and’, here). Also, the alternative *parandan=ššan=kan with an enclitic possessive pronoun is impossible because of the late date of the text (thus already CHD ibid.). The best solution is offered by Melchert (DCL:s.v.), who assumes a genitival adjective modifying dingir-lum (see under Meaning).

1.1.4Meaning
The context as presented in CHD P:139 (25’)[...]-x-x-uš pa-iz-zi dingir-lum pa-ra-an-da-aš-ša-an-⸢kán⸣ (26’)[...] (different Gilan 2018a:227: (25’)[...]-x-ki?-uš) allows to conclude that dingir-lum pa-ra-an-da-aš-ša-an-⸢kán⸣ constitutes a syntactic unit. This supports Melchert’s (DCL:s.v.) proposal that parandaššan is an epithet of the deity referring to his/her relationship to the scape animal and the latter is named after its function to “carry off” impurity, literally ‘off-carrier’ (see under Stem).Without translation Hoffner 1973a:87, Ünal 2007a:513.

1.1.5Stem
Melchert’s (DCL:s.v.) posits a derivational chain starting from the verb para-(ti) ‘to carry (off)’ → participle parand(i)- ‘carrying (off)’ → abstract noun paranda- c. ‘(the act of) carrying (off)’ → genitival adjective parandašša/i- c. ‘(the act of) carrying (off)’. However, the process may be reconstructed in a more economical way: para-(ti) ‘to carry (off)’ → participle parand(i)- ‘carrying (off)’, lexicalized as parand(i)- ‘the one carrying (off)’ → genitival adjective parandašša/i- c. ‘related to the one carrying (off), off-carrier’ with one step fewer.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
The Luwian origin of the lexeme is first suggested in DCL:s.v., based on the analysis of parandaššan as a form of a genitival adjective.
