1.1.4Meaning
The word has remained untranslated so far (DLL:100, CLL:239, HHw:183). Obviously, the song incipits are full of word-plays generating assonance and repetition, and it is hence difficult to decide whether the assonant words also belong to the same word family. From a more optimistic perspective, tūwalli(ya)- can be derived from the immediately preceding lexeme tūwā with the chain of the suffixes -alla/i- and -i(ya)- (see under Stem). In view of the formal analysis and given that the word refers to the storm-clouds mentioned in col. i, a meaning ‘appearing in a distance (?)’ in the incantation for rain does not seem implausible. Nevertheless, it should be kept in mind that the interpretation suggested here hinges on several assumptions that are hard to prove.

1.1.5Stem
Already CLL:239 posited a derivational relationship between tūwā and tūwalliya. The chain of suffixation tentatively suggested under Meaning comprises the following steps: adverb tūwā ‘in the distance, far away (?)’ → *tūwalla/i- ‘distant (?)’ (cf. also Hitt. tūwala- ‘far’) → substantivization *tūwall(i)- ‘the distant one, distance’ → tūwalli(ya)- ‘related to the distance, appearing in a distance (?)’.
