1.1.2Forms

dat.-loc. sg. tu-˹pí˺-iz-zi KBo 12.3 rev. iii 6’ (CTH 2, NS)

Attestation following HEG T,D:453 (cf. also Ünal 2016a:551). Helck 1983a:274 reads tu-[ri]-iz-zi on semantic grounds, though admitting that this reading does not fit the traces of the sign (Helck 1983a:275). The reading tu-˹pí˺-iz-zi was suggested by Neu apud HEG T,D:453 and since then it is generaly accepted (Miller 2001a:97 n. 75 [“(…) vastly preferable (…). The traces are easily recognisable as a (less likely ga)”]; Tischler 2008a:204, Tischler 2016a:388; Ünal 2016a:551). No photo is available in the Konkordanz.

1.1.3Meaning ‘(an adjective)’

As for the meaning (“uncertain” according to Miller 2001a:97 n. 75), Melchert 2005a:448 identifies this form as a Luwianism from tupi- ‘strike’ (3sg. pret. ind. act., see s.v.), with a question mark. However, the context points rather to an adjective tupizzi(ya)- in agreement with the following word meaning ‘well, source’ (with HEG T,D:453 [cf. also Tischler 2008a:204, Tischler 2016a:388; Ünal 2016a:551], who considers a meaning slightly different from ‘(cultic) pure’ as well as ‘impure, dirty’): (5’) (…) 3-ŠU ḫar-ni-ik-ta ma-[a-an…] (6) tu-˹˺-iz-zi wa-at-ta-ru-i tu-˹u˺-[…] (7) ERÍNMEŠŠU˺ Ù GIŠGIGIRMEŠ-ŠU URUZa-al-[pa(-)…] | (Helck 1983a:274, with his restorations) ‘He has defeated it thrice. When he […] at the t.-source … […] his army and his chariots (the town of) Zalpa […]’.

1.1.4Origin

Based on the considerations under Meaning, the connection with the verb Luwian ‘to strike’ is improbable (contra Melchert 2005a:448), and there is no hint for a Luwianism (it is not included in the list of Luwianisms of van den Hout 2007a either).
