1.1.4Meaning

No meaning is assigned in DLL:25, CLL:8, and HHw:13. While the context at KUB 35.109 iii 5’ does not provide any useful information, at KBo 4.11 rev. 56f., a-la-ni-in=tar ... ˹za˺-am-ma-ni-ia-an probably designates a negative concept contrasting with the za-am-ma-na-an-˹te˺-in ... Dwa-ar-wa-li-ia-an ‘damaged god of sowing/fertility’ (ibid. 58f., see also HEG U-Z:645f.). If so, a ‘hostile person causing damage’ seems to be a plausible option, allowing to relate alanna/i- to the root al- ‘other’ with its metaphoric meanings ‘distant’, ‘foreign’, ‘hostile’, and ‘wild’.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

If the semantic interpretation ‘hostile’ considered under Meaning is correct, alanna/i- can be analyzed as the root al- derived with the mutating suffix -anna/i-.

[E.R.]

For the lemma head see CLuw. āla/i-.
