1.1.4Meaning

Unfortunately, the word is attested in a fragmentary context, but at least it is clear that it functions as an attribute of anše.kur.ra-uš ‘horse’. Thus, it is certainly semantically equivalent to Hitt. waššant- anše.kur.ra- ‘“covered” horse’, a technical term from the hippological texts. Kammenhuber 1961b:350f., after Otten 1953a:40 prefers a literal translation (‘covered’ with a blanket), while Starke 1995a:43 thinks of specific kind of trot (‘versammelt’ as opposed to nekumant-, lit. ‘naked’, or ‘normal’ when used with horses). Noteworthy is also the occurrence of ḫi-iš-ša-[ in the preceding line 6’, which reminds of Hitt. GIŠḫiššā- ‘pole’ and would fit the mention together with a horse.

1.1.5Stem

Otten 1953a:40 interprets the form as a participle of wašš- ‘to dress, wear’; cf. also tentatively DLL:108, Eichner 1969a:40 n. 42 (with different semantics), CLL: 262, Ünal 2007a:793, HHw:s.v., HEG U-Z:514. Ending in -ant(i)- instead of usual -amma/i-, the participle must have been lexicalized.
