1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is largely unclear, because the logogram (sign *66*) has yet to be fixed with a syllabic value, if any. The sign itself represents a mirror-like doubling of the sign (*66), which also has the syllabic value 〈pi〉, but it is doubtful if should be understood as a variation of the reduplication for 〈pi-pi-〉 found in the verb /pibissa-(i)/ ‘to give’. However, the remainder of the stem as /-nuwa-/ is certain, since this suffix is well-known from many other lexemes, cf. the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word is unclear aside from its status as a factitive or causative, which is obvious from its stem-forming suffix, cf. the discussion of the stem. It is attested in a partly broken clause at YALBURT frag. 4, §1: […] PRAE-na (MONS)pa-tara/i *a-pi-i(a)-ha MANDARE-nú-wa/i-ha, approx. /… parran Pattara abin=ha …-nuwahha/, perhaps translating as ‘I …-ed … before Mount Pattara also on that side’ (cf. Hawkins 1995a:68f.).The analysis of the clause differs from that offered by Hawkins, who takes the spelling 〈pi-i(a)-ha-a〉 as a representation of /piyahha/ ‘I gave’. Instead, the string of signs is here regarded as an instance of initial-a-final, resulting in 〈*a-pi-i(a)-ha〉 for /abin=ha/, i.e. the ablative of the distal demonstrative /aba-/ (after Goedegebuure 2007a) followed by the linker /=ha/ ‘and, also’ (cf. Yakubovich 2017e). Poetto 1993a:33 suggests ‘I made sacrifices’ (“feci offerte”), and while an interpretation along these lines is contextually tempting,One may consider ‘I caused … to give … to Mount Pattara also on that side’. it remains unproven for the time being, not least because the beginning of the clause is missing in the lacuna; cf. the comments by Yakubovich 2017c:12 n. 12, who very tentatively considers a reading /arinu(wa)-/ as a possibility, but refrains from a semantic interpretation.

1.1.5Stem

While the first part of the stem is unclear, the verb evidently belongs to the stems in /-nu(wa)-(i)/, a suffix deriving factitives and causatives, cf. Sasseville 2021a:463f. The present verb may be related to the word family around HLuw. /piya-(i)/ ‘to give’, but this remains unproven for the time being.
