Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Impossible is the reading é gul-lu-ši-iš-ša by Del Monte 2010a:145 (perhaps a typographic mistake?).

1.1.4Meaning

In the context preceding the lexeme, Ea tells his vizier Tašmišu to step away, because he, Ea, has seen the dead. He describes them: (11’)... na-at saḫarḪI.A-uš (12’)Glossenkeilgul-lu-ši-iš-š=a ma-aḫ-ḫa-an a-ra-an-ta-ri “they stand (there) like dust and gullušiš” (KUB 33.106 + KBo 26.65 iv 11’f.; cf. Starke 1990a:117f.).

The lexeme has received very little attention. Neither the editors of the text (Götze 1969a, García Trabazo 2002a:247 with n. 109, Del Monte 2010a:148, Rieken et al. 2009h) nor Starke 1990a:117f. offer a translation, nor do CLL:107 and HHw:83. At least, Ünal 2007a:356 glosses it with “something like dust or fog in the Netherworld.” In view of the coordination with saḫarḪI.A-uš ‘dust’ and the apparent connection with GIŠgulluštānn(i)- ‘muller’, a meaning ‘flour, coarse meal’ can be deemed likely.

1.1.5Stem

The coordination of Glossenkeilgul-lu-ši-iš-š=a with the form saḫarḪI.A-uš (functioning as a nom. pl. c.) points to a nom. pl. c. of an s-, a- or iya-stem in Hittite. Considering the existence of a neuter s-stem gulluš- in Cuneiform Luwian context, the most economical choice is to posit a stem gulluša-, thematized according to the standard borrowing process.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The plausible assumption of a borrowing (thus Starke 1990a:118, CLL:107, van den Hout 2006a:243) is probably based on the use of the gloss wedge and the occurrence of gulluš- and its derivative GIŠgulluštānn(i)- in Luwian context.
