1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. ⸢šar-ḫu-li-iš⸣ KUB 35.67 ii 1’ (CTH 759, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Located at the broken edge of the tablet, all signs are incomplete. However, there is no alternative to the reading proposed in DLL:86. The existence of the lexeme in Luwian was also posited by Rieken 2004a:45, 47 on account of the reversely i-mutated ablative form šarḫulaz (KUB 12.65 iii? 11) in Hittite context (different CHD Š:254).

1.1.4Meaning

The tentative translation as ‘pillar (?)’ (CLL:189, HHw:145) relies on the homonymy with Hitt. šarḫuli-, which has long been interpreted with due caution as ‘pillar (?)’ (see CHD Š:254-256 with references). Since in Luwian context, šarḫul(i)- occurs in a list of clauses containing also ḫalmaššuwitt(i)- ‘throne’ and ḫaššanitt(i)- ‘hearth’, it is clear that it denotes some inner part of the house. Therefore, ‘pillar (?)’ is accepted here as well.Outdated is the interpretation as ‘Brunnengerüst, Brunnen’ in HW:385.

1.1.5Stem

The attested nom. sg. c. form points to an i-mutated stem.
