unclear DUGwa-lu-ta!-aš-š[i-…] KBo 2.7 rev. 5 (CTH 526, NS)

DUGwalutaššianza at KUB 38.32 i 14 is part of a list of direct objects. As a consequence, the form ending in -anza must be a Luwian neuter acc. sg. with secondary ending =ša/za.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, except for KBo 2.7 rev. 5, for which only the hand copy was checked. – The text at KBo 2.7 rev. 5 reads DUGwa-lu-ša-aš-ši-[], but Carter 1962a:200 suggested plausibly an emendation changing -ša- to -ta-. – Cammarosano 2019a:52 restores not only the acc. pl. DUGwa-l[u-ta-aš-ši-uš] at KpT 1.36 i 5, but also the same form ibid. iii 12’’ ([DUGwa-lu-ta-a]š-ši-uš). The latter is far from assured, and the former, based on the restoration of the ending ibid. i 5, is equally insecure. – Restoration as DUGwa-lu-ta-aš-ši-ia-[an-za] at KUB 56.56 iv 13 suggested in Pecchioli Daddi & Baldi 2004a:498.

1.1.4Meaning

The most valuable indication regarding the meaning comes from the determinative DUG for vessel names. It is used for beer and wine (see also HEG U-Z:274).

1.1.5Stem

The neuter acc. sg. DUGwalutaššianza can be assigned to an a-, an an-, or an ant-stem. The first is perhaps most likely, since its derivation involves fewer and more commonly used suffixes and processes: walut(i)- → gen. adj. walut-ašša/i- → (subs.) → (adj.) walutašš-i(ya)- → (subs.), but see also Tischler (HEG U-Z:274) suggesting a stem in -ant- (thus also Cammarosano 2019a:64; Ünal 2007a:784 posits DUGwalutašši-/walušaššiya-).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

Already Carter 1962a:200 argued that, on account of the formation with the Luwian suffix -ašša/i- and the existence of a potential base walut(i)- in Luwian, DUGwalutaššiy(a)- originates in Luwian. In contrast, Melchert (pers. comm.) regards the suffixation with -iya- as a Hittite process applied to Luwian walutašša/i-. This seems less likely in view of the genuinely Luwian form DUGwalutaššianza at KUB 38.32 i 14.
