ḫantašān

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This word is found in the mythical passage within the ritual for the disappearing deity.

1.1.2Forms

gen. adj. acc. sg. c. or nom./acc. sg. n. (?) ḫa-an-ta-ša-a-an KUB 35.168, 8’ (CTH 752, OS)

Pace Carruba 1970a:54, the nom./acc. sg. n. of a participle in -nt- is not a likely interpretation, since the cluster /-nt/ is preserved in word-final position. Therefore, a genitival adjective is suggested here tentatively.

[D.S.]

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photograph in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). There is very little space left between the word ḫa-an-ta-ša-a-an and the following ku-w[a]-i[t and, therefore, one could even suggest that kuwait has been cliticized and attached to ḫantašān.

[D.S.]

1.1.4Meaning

An etymological connection with Pal. *ḫant- ‘forehead, front’ is likely; cf. Pal. ḫantanā-(di). However, nothing is clear from the passage, except that the eagle, which is trying to rouse the sleeping deity, is playing some part.

[D.S.]
