1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of Cuneiform Luwian as ‘to crush, break’ is confirmed by Melchert 1988b:215f. on the basis of functionally equivalent Hittite passages where the verb corresponds to Hitt. arḫa duwanizzi ‘breaks apart’ (KBo 22.254 ii 4-5´) and paršiya ‘breaks’ (KBo 29.16 ii 6´). This analysis is further supported by the connection to Hitt. malla-(i) ‘to grind’ and consensual (cf. e.g. Starke 1990a:307 n. 1050, CLL:134, Rieken 1999a:70 n. 335, Jasanoff 2003a:64 n. 127, Frotscher 2012a:151, Oettinger 2013-2014a:164, Dempsey 2015a:226, Sasseville 2021a:351). According to Sasseville (ibid.), the reduplication indicates distributive function, since the objects in the 3sg. pres. attestations are several tongues rather than one.

1.1.5Stem

CLuw. mammalḫuwa-(i) is a ḫi-conjugating stem. In contrast to the Hittite cognate malla-(i) ‘to grind’, it seems to continue a u-extended root (cf. Melchert 1988b:215f., HED M:24f., Sasseville 2021a:194).
