The assignment to the present lexeme of ]x-al-du-ni-i-ia at KUB 35.48 iii 13’ and duplicate ]x-al-du-ni-ia KUB 32.4, 6’ as considered in CLL:98 is less than assured. The ending points to a stem in -i(ya)-, hence the assignment to the lemma kaldunni(ya)- in DCL:s.v.

1.1.4Meaning

Contra Haas & Thiel 1978a:288, Poetto 1983c:37f. argued that UZUkaldunn(i)- cannot denote a tool, but must, on account of the determinative UZU, be the name of a body-part. Moreover, the syntagma of ⸢i-šar-ú-i-li-iš UZUkal-du-un-ni[-iš] “the right kaldunn(i)-” at KBo 29.31 iv 4’ shows that the body-part occurs in pairs. Following Starke (apud Poetto 1983c:37f.), [kald]unniš at KBo 29.16 ii? 8’ matches UZUwallaš ḫaštai ‘bone of the thigh’, attested two lines earlier (ibid. ii? 6’) in the description of the ritual performance. Consequently, UZUkaldunn(i)- can be assigned the meaning ‘thigh-bone’ (Melchert in DCL:s.v.), thus specifying the widely accepted translation ‘thigh’ (see Poetto 1983c:37f., CLL:98, HHw:70, Yakubovich 2019a:554; different Starke 1990a:62: ‘shoulder blade, haunch’). Melchert’s modified meaning assignment facilitates an easier fit with the context from KBo 13.260 ii 12f., in which the kaldunn(i)- is listed among several tools (treated in Yakubovich 2019a:554), since the use of strong bones as tools is well-known.

1.1.5Stem

Starke 1990a:62 classifies the lexeme as a stem in -ann(i)- (with syncopated *-uwa- > -u-). The formant preceding -ann(i)- is most likely *-tu- as in Hitt. egdu- ‘leg’, see also under Origin.

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

Melchert (DCL:s.v.) connects CLuw. kaldunn(i)- ‘thigh-bone’ to the root of Gk. σκέλος ‘thigh’.
