1.1.3Meaning

The meaning ‘except’ for m̃mẽ is possible to extract directly from the context. The word occurs in a stipulation regarding who is allowed to be placed inside of a rock tomb, where any person except the wife of the grave’s owner is prohibited from being placed inside the tomb. Applying this sense to the passage on TL 75 yields the following contextually appropriate translation: me=ije : ni hr[ppi] ṭãṭu : ṭike : m̃ṃẽ : ladã ‘no one should be placed on it except for the wife’. An interpretation of m̃mẽ as ‘except’ was made already by Torp 1898a:38, and similar analyses may found in e.g. Bugge 1901a:31 (‘überdies’), Pedersen 1904a:203, Houwink ten Cate 1961a:95, Carruba 1980a:288f. (‘sola, unico’, under this analysis agreeing with the following ladã), DLL:42.
