1.1.4Meaning
In every preserved context, the word ānzaššiš is the subject of nakkuššiya/e-(mi) or nakkušešš-(mi) ‘to be(come) a scapegoat’ (CHD L-N:377). Accordingly, it is suggested that ānzaššiš denotes an animal in HW 2nd ed. A:124f. Conversely, a segmentation ānza=ššiš ‘his a.’ is favored in the CHD L-N:377 and Riemschneider 2004a:186f. prefers not to provide a meaning. On formal grounds, however, it is possible to interpret ānzaššiš as a (substantivized?) Luwian genitival adjective to the pronominal base ānza- ‘we, us’ with a resulting meaning ‘one of us’ or perhaps more likely ‘one of ours’. In either case, this interpretation remains tentative, pending further evidence.
[O.B.]
1.1.5Stem
Although only attested in the nom. sg., this word seems to inflect as a substantivized i-mutating adjective. This may be supported by the morphological shape — Luw. ānzašša/i- has the appearance of a genitival adjective in -ašša/i- formed to the pronominal stem ānza- ‘we, us’.
[O.B.]
1.1.6Origin
A Luwian origin of this word is favored by the genitival adjective suffix -ašša/i- along with the regular 1pl. pronominal base ānza- (cf. also Melchert 2005a:449).
[O.B.]
For the derivational base, see CLuw. ānza- ‘we, us’.
