1.1 Hieroglyphic Luwian

/mar(al)larV-/, mara/i-la+ra/i-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This hapax is attested in a single inscription from Karkamiš, dating to the late 8th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

3sg./pl.? pret. act. /mar(al)larV(n)ta/ mara/i-la+ra/i-tá KARKAMIŠ A30a3, l. 1 (Karkamiš)

The choice of 〈tá〉 for the last sign at KARKAMIŠ A30a3, l. 1 suggests an ending in /-tta/ (3sg. pret. act.) or one in /-nta/ (3pl. pret. act.). Since the entire context is missing, the grammatical number must remain open.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is partly unclear, even though it is spelt fully syllabically. However, without any known etymological links, the HLuw. writing system leaves much leeway. It is possible, but not at all provable at present, that the word belongs to the family around /mar-(ti)/ ‘to order, request’, which a spelling involving the logogram (sign *22) would make more probable.

1.1.4Meaning

The word has not yet been fixed with a meaning, because it is attested only once in a severely damaged inscription. In fact, it represents the only fully preserved word of KARKAMIŠ A30a3. Nothing can therefore be said about its context.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

Based on the spelling, the verb may be deemed to belong either to the stems in /-a-(ti)/ or to those in /-i-(ti)/, cf. Sasseville 2021a:19-21, 131f.
