1.1.2Forms

acc. /…/ SCALPRUM.CRUS.LOCUS-zi/a YALBURT frag. 4, §2 (Konya)

As noted by Hawkins 1995a:74, the form at YALBURT frag. 4, §2 may be analysed as a nom./acc. sg. of a neuter gender noun with the neuter particle /-za/, or an acc. pl. of a common gender noun in /-nzi/; either is possible in the context and the matter cannot be decided without further data.

1.1.3Graphic Features

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Unclear. The logograms used ( sign *268, *82, *201) are likely employed for their semantic content, as only two of them are known to have additional phonetic values; see Hawkins 1995a:74 for semantically similar spellings and words in other languages, none of which appears a good fit for the present lexeme.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning of this word is suggested mainly on the basis of its logographic representation. Hawkins 1995a:69, 74 draws on the cuneiform sumerogram equivalent to the HLuw. signs, viz. NA4KI.GUB ‘podium, socle’, and proposes a very literal “stone stand-place”, perhaps ‘socle’, whereas Poetto 1993a:33f. suggests ‘sacred precincts’ (“recinti sancti”). Either proposal is possible and fits the context; the translation chosen here is therefore a more general approximation. The relevant clause at YALBURT frag. 4, §2 is very short: SCALPRUM.CRUS.LOCUS-zi/a i(a)-zi/a-ha, approx. /…=za izziha/, meaning ‘I made the/a (kind of) memorial’ (cf. Hawkins 1995a:68f.).

1.1.5Stem

Unclear. As discussed under Forms above, the word may be either a common or a neuter gender noun. If it should turn out to be the latter, its stem or nom./acc. sg. ending causes the neuter particle /-sa/ to appear in its allomorphic form /-za/, cf. Melchert 2003b:183.
