1.1.4Meaning

Sasseville 2021b:219, who first drew attention to the fragment and especially the lexeme, viewed it as an exact match of Hitt. iwaru- ‘gift, inheritance-share, dowry’ and suggested the same meaning for CLuw. iwaru-. As he points out, further confirmation comes from the fact that iwaru at Privat 40 ii 2’ functions as the direct object of piyatta ‘he gave’.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

Both the attested form in -u and the Hittite match speak unanimously for a neuter u-stem, a rare stem class in Luwian.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

If the word is genuine Anatolian, a PAnat. reconstruction *h1ih1-u̯r̥- + -u- is highly attractive (see Carruba 1966a:16 n. 17, Rieken 1999a:354, but for the root of CLuw. iya-(i), see PAnat. *h1ói̯h1-/h1ih1 ‘to take’). On the other hand, the word has been treated as a loanword from Hurrian ewuru attested in Akkadian transmission (Speiser 1935a:436 n. 17, also preferred by Puhvel in HED E,I:503, but see HEG I-K:454f. and Richter 2012a:95f.), but further evidence is needed. For a summary of the literature on Hitt. iwaru-, see HEG ibid. and HED E,I:502-504, and on the Hurrian word, see Richter 2012a:95f.
