1.1.4Meaning

In accordance with its highly fragmentary and uninformative context, the lexeme has been pointed out by Melchert (pers. comm.) as an additional Luwian lexeme, though without suggesting any translation. However, one may speculate that doppelter Glossenkeilwallūti is another form of the putative Luwian verb wal(l)u- spelled wa-lu-u- in Luwian context, thus confirming the assumption that its underlying phonological structure is /wallu-/ with a geminate lateral.

Alternatively, an instrument noun in -ut(i)- is possible as attested by walut(i)- (see under Lemma). However, since there is no independent reason to suspect that, in contrast to the verb wal(l)u-, the noun walut(i)- shows a defective spelling of the lateral, the former solution is given preference here, although it faces a number of uncertainties.

1.1.5Stem

If the assignment of doppelter Glossenkeilwallūti to Cuneiform Luwian wal(l)u- is correct, it can be classified as a verb in -u-.

1.1.6Origin

A Luwian origin is indicated by the use of the gloss wedges and the final sequence -Vti, even if it is not a verb with the Luwian 3sg. pres. ending -ti, but a noun with the suffix -ut(i)-.
