‘guarantor, representative vel sim.’1.1.1Transmission
Attested in an official inscription of unknown date from Kaunos (Adiego 2007a:301) as well as in a Carian-Greek bilingual decree from Kaunos dated to the end of the 4th c. BC (Adiego 2007a:155 with refs.).

| acc. pl. c. | sarniš | C.Ka 2, 4.7 |
| sarni[š] | C.Ka 5, 6 |
Attestations following Adiego 2007a:411, checked against the photographs in Frei & Marek 1997a:Tafel I‒II and Frei & Marek 2000a:86. Its segmentation is assured in C.Ka 5 due to the surrounding words (otonosn and mdoτ2un) and probable in the similar context of C.Ka 2. The contextually assured restoration of sarni[š] follows Frei & Marek 1997a:39 and it is accepted by all authors quoted below.

1.1.3Meaning ‘guarantor, representative vel sim.’
There is a general agreement that this word corresponds to προξένους in the Greek version of C.Ka 5 since its identification by Frei & Marek 1997a:39 (Hajnal 1997b:163f.; Neumann 1998a:28; Adiego 2007a:411). Several etymological arguments have also been cited for supporting this interpretation, but they are either phonologically irregular (to CLuw. šarri ‘above, up’ by Frei & Marek 1997a:39 [followed by Hajnal 1997b:163f. with an ad hoc phonological solution] admitting the problem in n. 79, see also Adiego 2007a:411) or in need of further evidence (as ‘guarantor’ to the Glossenkeilwort zaršiya- ‘safe-conduct’ by Neumann 1998a:28f. and to Lyd. šarẽta- ‘patron’ [see s.v.] by Schürr apud Hajnal 1997b:164 n. 35).
Although Adiego 1998b:22, Adiego 2002a:17f. convincingly argues that the full Carian equivalent of προξένους is sarni[š] mdoτ2un as ‘representantes de los extranjeros’ or ‘garantes de los extranjeros’ (see, however, the discussion s.v. for competing analyses), this does not cause any problem regarding the meaning of sarni, which is thus ‘guarantor’, ‘representative’ or similar.
